Government deepened practical AI adoption support for small business
The most concrete new business-adoption move since the last snapshot was the Government’s 11 June funding package for two AI-enabled support programmes. MBIE said Business Mentors New Zealand would receive $82,000 to build its AI Digital Mentor tool, while Business South would receive an additional $400,000 to expand its AcceleratorNZ programme to 500 more businesses over the next 12 months. The package is modest in fiscal terms, but it is meaningful because it pushes AI support beyond strategy documents and into hands-on diagnostics, mentoring, and workflow improvement for smaller firms. Science policy became more explicit about AI’s place in the national growth agenda
A bigger structural development was the 10 June release of the Government’s Science Investment Plan 2026–2036. The plan says the science system will be organised around four enduring pillars, including “Technology for Prosperity,” and frames the reforms as a shift from a fragmented, instrument-led model to a more strategy-led system tied to economic growth and commercial outcomes. The biggest unresolved item remains the AI Research Platform. MBIE’s public page still says phase-two proposals were due on 31 March 2026, that the assessment panel met in mid-April 2026, and that an announcement timeline will be shared “in due course.” Earlier programme documentation had pointed to a late April funding decision, May 2026 announcement, and 1 July 2026 contract commencement.
